Viva Archiva!

Helmut & Johanna Kandl are among Austria’s central artistic personalities. The focus of their oeuvre is the critical observation of economic and social phenomena and their effects on everyday life. Helmut & Johanna Kandl own a fascinating private collection with thousands of photos and books, a great chunk of video footage, newspaper clippings, sound recordings, objects and relicts. Constantly on the go, the artist couple collected these things in the course of time during research activities and related travels. Drawn entirely from this archive, Helmut & Johanna Kandl create artistic works, sometimes only after a couple of years, sometimes exploring a completely new topic. In their multimedia exhibition settings the boundaries between research work, documentation and artistic reflection are melting.

The exhibition offers glances into the treasures of the artist couple and shines a light on many unknown objects. Photographs, paintings, videos, texts and collected objects illustrate Helmut & Johanna Kandl‘s multifaceted work processes. As part of the show, their new film “Pecher und Köhler, Schönbrunner Gelb und Kremser Weiß“ is on view for the first time. In poetic shots, the film atmospherically correlates the production of painting materials with their use in the workshop.

The range of the references covers the show “Wachau Bild“, organized in 1996 by the Kunsthalle Krems in the Minorite church in Stein, the exploration of ex-socialist countries in Europe and, most recently, the strong focus on the creation and use of materials used in painting.

A joint catalogue will be produced for the two exhibitions at the State Gallery of Lower Austria and the Kunsthaus Graz, which dedicates an exhibition entitled Palette to Helmut & Johanna Kandl, starting in late November 2021.
