Across the River

A shooting star in the international art world, Chiharu Shiota will implement a project for the State Gallery of Lower Austria that references architecture and has installative character.

For her spectacular, expansive installations, Shiota weaves together objects of everyday use with yarn. Her project for the State Gallery of Lower Austria will relate to the city of Krems, the Wachau region or to Lower Austria and enter into a dialogue with the building’s architecture.

Over the course of many exhibition projects, the Japan-born and Berlin-based artist has accumulated materials provided by the general public. For her work “The Key in The Hand“, which was the artist’s breakthrough at the 2015 Venice Biennale, she collected 180,000 keys from around the world and connected them in a mesh of red yarn and boats.

Curators: Gerda Ridler, Günther Oberhollenzer

The exhibition will end on Jan. 15, 2023, and not on April 23, 2023, as originally planned.
