Due to the measures to contain Covid-19, the exhibition was postponed from November 2020 to May 2021.

The works by the Vienna-based artist collective Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber in urban spaces have often caused a great sensation. Their art in this context is frequently not recognizable as such and benefits from the corresponding element of surprise. They often place their sculptures and objects in seemingly impossible locations.

Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber have repeatedly created works addressing the relationship between civilization and nature, such as with their project Trouble in Paradise (at the Schönbrunn Zoo) and Freeze (at Vienna’s Naturhistorisches Museum). To date, all projects related to this theme have been realized in an urban setting. Now, however, the project Cliffhanger, another exploration of how we relate to nature, heads out into the countryside, to Lower Austria’s Ötschergräben. Visitors must hike for an hour to view the work.

The State Gallery takes the opportunity provided by Cliffhanger to invite Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber to present an exhibition. The Gallery’s top level, the planned venue for the show, features a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape and of the historic town center of Stein. In many of Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber’s works, particularly those in public spaces, sight lines and perspectives play a key role. Here, as well, the panorama is incorporated into the exhibition.
